I first came across Lane via Instagram. I have a habit of checking the Winter Soldier tag and came across her amazing Winter Soldier. When I thought of a cosplayer to interview for this little weekly thing, Lane instantly popped into my head!
First, tell us a little about yourself! How long have you bee cosplaying?
Lane: My name is Lane and I’m from Austin, TX. I’ve been cosplaying since November 2012 so about a year and three months or so. Loki was my first cosplay and my first costume building experience ever so I felt more confident tackling the Winter Soldier cosplay because I had learned so much from teaching myself how to build Loki.
I first came across your work via Instagram and thought you were a pretty badass Winter Soldier. How long did it take to put together your cosplay?
Lane: For the Winter Soldier cosplay I think it took about two months to get the whole thing put together and completed. The arm was by far the most challenging part and I’m still not totally pleased with it so I’ll be working on a different one. It’s sort of a trial and error thing, you see what works and what doesn’t and you take it one step at a time. And now that I have a better idea of what I want, I can start the new one that will more closely resemble the one from the film.
Could you tell me a little bit more about the arm?
Lane: The arm for the cosplay is made out of thermo plastics, and I’m not sure I would recommend the method, simply because I’m not fully satisfied with it! I’m in the process of making another one that’s more accurate to the movie instead of the comics!
Do you have any tips for people looking to get into cosplay?
Lane: This is only my second cosplay so I’m by no means an expert but if I had to give anyone tips it would be to spend time actually researching different methods to go about making a costume or a prop. I’ve learned SO much by simply searching the internet and reading tutorial after tutorial and I’ve taught myself everything I know so far by doing that. Anyone can do it with a little time and patience. And most importantly, HAVE FUN! That’s what this is all about and don’t let anyone tell you any different.
Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes is my all time favorite character. I want to build several different Bucky cosplays to cover all of his looks, comic verse and MCU, but with the movie coming out I wanted to start with the most challenging! I just adore the character and all of his layers so much, I really connected with him when I read the comics and my love has grown since.
As far as the movie goes, what are you looking forward to the most?
Lane: I think Sebastian Stan is going to knock it out of the park. I’m not sure if anyone has seen some of his other work outside of the MCU but he’s incredible and one of my favorite actors as well. So what’s better than having a favorite actor play your favorite character? I’m really looking forward to it, I think he’s really going to do Bucky the justice he deserves. Also, I’m so curious to see what they’re going to change about the Winter Soldier’s backstory and how they’re going to blend it in with everything else going on in the MCU. And of course, I’m looking forward to the big Winter Soldier/Captain America showdown where Steve is trying to get Bucky to remember who he is. So basically I can’t wait for ALL OF IT.
What are you plans for when the movie opens? Attending in cosplay?
Lane: Oh man, I have a big group of people going with me and we’re going to the earliest showing possible and then to the showing after that as well so I can let it all sink in properly. I will definitely be attending in my cosplay and I’ll be sure to take plenty of photos to share! Hopefully it will be as awesome as it was when I dressed at Loki for Thor 2!
Lane: OH GEEZ, I’m not even sure I can pick out just one. I think everyone loves the “Who the hell is Bucky?” moment and I seriously carry around an omnibus of collected Winter Soldier comics from Captain America Volume Five. I keep it in my bag so I can take it out and shove it in everyone’s face, all of my friends have to deal with it and now they’re all just as excited as I am. There’s a moment after Steve’s death where Bucky is sitting in a bar and he decides that Tony Stark is responsible for Steve’s death and some idiot playing pool makes a comment about how Steve was a traitor and shouldn’t get a heroes burial and Bucky loses his cool and basically destroys everyone in the place. And then stands there and cries because he knew Steve would be disappointed in him. Like, really? Way to break my heart. Oh and when he faces off with Tony in the Iron Man armor and takes him down, rips the face plate off, and says something like “What were you saying about me not being able to hurt you?” And then all of the moments from the Winter Soldier comic series, like the gorillas with the jet packs and the pancake house (which I cosplayed!). So again, all of the moments are my favorite.
Finally, are you attending any conventions this year?
Lane: I AM! I’m going to try to make as many conventions as possible but for sure I’ll be going to Austin Comic Con since it’s my hometown but I’m going to do my best to make it to Dragon*Con as well because it’s on the weekend of my birthday. I really really want to go to SDCC but I’m not so sure that’s in the cards this year. I’ll pick up a couple more cons in between and hopefully meet a lot of awesome people!
