This post is part of theme week for Geek Blogs Unite! If you have a nerdy/geeky related blog, check it out! It’s a great place to find new blogs to visit.
Halloween is my favorite time of the year. I love all the spooky things, the weather (except this year it’s still in the 80’s), and give me all the Pumpkin Spice goodies. My absolute favorite part though is setting up my Spooky Town. What the hell is that you ask? It’s a collection of building and decor by Lemax. It’s like a Christmas Village but instead of Santa you’d probably find Jack Skellington hanging out. The buildings often light up, move, and/or play sounds. I just love all of it. I don’t remember when I first started collecting. I know it’s been a few years now. I normally pick up a few new pieces every season. I personally buy them at Michael’s Arts & Crafts but I’m sure other hobby shops sell them too. Each year brings new goodies and I can’t hide my excitement when I see it finally set up in store! Sometimes I even check Ebay to see if I missed anything from past years. There’s a really amazing pirate ship, and a nice train set that I’d love to get my hands on. Honestly though, we’re running out of room. I can see needing to rotate items in and out of rotation down the road. Here’s a video of my current Spooky Town set up!
I think right now my favorite piece if the Tilt-A-Whirl. It’s probably the best quality I’ve seen in awhile from the collection! Now, I have some tips for you guys if you’re interested in starting your own collection!
Again, I’m only speaking for shopping at Michael’s, but they always go on sale or you can use a coupon on them. A few weeks ago, they had the collection 60% off! If you wait too long though some of the more popular pieces will sell out. Sometimes you’ll find online exclusive pieces as well. Normally early in the season they’ll float around 40% off but just keep an eye out for that 20% off bonus coupon that can be used on sale items.
It’s very easy to just jump in and buy everything! But you need to pace yourself. Like I said before, every year new items are released. I recommend just trying to pick up one or two main buildings and a few of the smaller stand alone items.
USE OTHER COLLECTIONS
You’ll notice in the video we have some tiny little hay bales randomly set up around town. Those aren’t part of the Spooky Town collection. They’re just random things we found in other sections of the store. Sometimes you can mix and match things to add a little spice to your town! Just make sure everything works size wise. The string of pumpkin lights are also not part of the collection and just something to add some extra color.
That’s it really! I mean, it’s pretty easy to do. Some buildings run on batteries, others are plugged in. If they have sound, there’s normally volume control that way you don’t have 5 buildings all making different and loud noises throughout your house. If you’re like me, you’ll find yourself moving things around the entire time it’s set up. But hey, if you have any questions let me know! I’ll try my best to answer them!
