I don’t consider myself a super DIY person. Granted, when I was a kid I use to do all kinds of arts and crafts. I’d buy kits and all sorts of things, from those stained glass kits to Christmas ornaments. When I started this Winter Soldier Wednesday thing I knew I wanted to include something crafty yet simple. That’s why I settled on a hair piece! It’s a fun and simple way to share your fandom with the world.
I really lucked out with finding this pre-cut wooden symbol. I picked it up at Michael’s Crafts for less than a dollar. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be used for a Sheriff’s badge but it works perfectly for the version of the Winter Soldier star that I’m working on. This is the star I’m going for:
I started working on one that was based more on the current version but it’s not turning out the way I like. Since I wanted to have something for this post I moved along to this one. The first thing I did was paint the star white. I used regular tape to mark off the edges to make painting a little easier. You can see that here:
I did a few coats (I might even do one more) then moved onto the red around the outside. Once again I used tape to help keep colors from bleeding. I just used typical crafting paint that you can pick up for around a $1, depending on the brand.
Now, to have the blue that you see on the inside of the star, I took some craft foam and trimmed it up to size. I used white craft foam and just painted it but you could go ahead and just buy blue too! I would still throw a coat of paint on it though to help it look more together. You don’t want it to scream “HEY! I’M FOAM!” I wish there was more space for the blue to show through but you work with what you have. I once again used my handy dandy archery glue to keep it in place but you can use any glue you have on hand. I’m not 100% sure on hot glue as you don’t want anything to melt.
I picked up a pack of hair clips at Michael’s and just picked the size that worked best for the piece. Once again get out your glue and secure that sucker. Now you have a pretty awesome barrette to wear when Captain America: Winter Soldier opens on April 4th. Of course you could easily make this flashier by using glitter/stones but I wanted to keep it simple and understated. I’m not 100% happy only because I should have painted the inside of the symbol as well, and it needs a little touching up. It’s not too bad for the first time though! If you’re wondering, this is still very light. The wood is very thin and light, it won’t feel heavy on your head at all. You could even make a pin the same way really if that’s your thing!
Don’t forget to look for coupons before doing your crafting! Stores like JoAnn’s and Michael’s are always offering coupons. Even if you just save a few cents, it’s still something. Another tip is be sure to take your time and look around. Dig through those bins! If I had rushed in and out I would’ve never found this pre-cut design.
Being the perfectionist I am, it’s KILLING me that there’s spots and things but I needed to get it done for the post and probably rushed it a bit.
Travis is back and he’s disecting the new TV spot! I’m throwing in a bit of a spoiler warning just in case people have cut themselves off from new footage.
