I’ll try and keep this spoiler free for the most part. If something gets into that realm, I’ll be sure to make a note of it beforehand! I think my main issue is the fact that Netflix keeps making these shows too long. There’s no need for this show to be 13 episodes. Especially since a lot of the episodes are pretty heavy violence wise. I 100% think that 10 episodes would have been plenty. It would have tightened up the story telling a bit, but still would leave room for back/side story. I mean, after watching just 3 episodes I felt like I had been sitting on my ass for 10 hours already. Then when I got to episode 12, I kept thinking how is there still one more left?! I’m guessing the episode order might be a Marvel thing, since Netflix has plenty of shows that vary in episodes. “Mindhunter” had 10 and “Stranger Things” had 8. Of course “Defenders” had 8 as well, and for me that was perfect.
I actually really hated the “villains” in this series and that’s a good thing. The only other baddie that I despised previously was Kilgrave. The others I could take them or leave them. The cast of “The Punisher” was its greatest strength and probably what kept me hooked if I’m being honest. I never finished “Iron Fist” because I couldn’t deal with Danny and none of the other characters grabbed me enough in those first 3 episodes to get me to care. I found myself caring about about minor characters though with this show. I love Curtis and was ready to fight anyone for him! He must be protected at all costs. Speaking of characters, I think the show needed more Karen. Maybe it was just us fans who hyped it up but I feel like she could have had a bigger role or something. It’s almost like she was there to just tie all the shows together.
Getting back to the violence, yes the show is bloody and violent. I mean, it’s The Punisher. It’s a show about war and a man having his family murdered. The one scene I found to be a bit much was during a flashback to when he was overseas. I think that was the only time where I thought to myself “OK, any minute you can stop now.” Other than that, I didn’t have any real issues. That probably says more about me than anything. If you’re sensitive to certain images, I recommend just not bingeing the show. There’s nothing wrong with watching a few episodes at a time. That’s how I watched “Jessica Jones” because I felt some of it was too heavy to watch non-stop.
I am curious to see where it goes from here. Frank was on a mission and that mission has been accomplished. Obviously there’s plenty of story to grab from the comics but it’ll be interesting to see if he pops up again in any of the other Netflix shows. You can’t tell me that the rest of the Netflix Marvel crew didn’t notice the foolishness that was going down! In the end, I did enjoy the show. I mean, I did watch the entire thing in pretty much a day. Plus their Twitter responded to one of my tweets. In the end, I can see why some won’t dig this show, and I can see why others would put it at their #1 spot. I’m still not sure where it lands for me.
Have you watched any of the show yet? What did you think?
