I always like to share a cost breakdown of my cosplays because I think it’s important! Everyone says it but it’s true, cosplay does not need to cost and arm and leg. You can put together a costume for a very fair price, and for every budget. Now, it all depends on the character of course but it can be done! Since I didn’t use the wig I ordered, I’m not including that below.
Two Tops: Commissioned from Lady Shepard: $200
Obviously this was the most expensive part of my costume. I tried to figure out a way to do it myself but since it was the only piece I planned to have commissioned, I figured I’d just go that route. If you have sewing skills, you could probably work something up by re-purposing or making changes to existing items. I don’t have those skills! When you break it down though, $100 each for two custom made tops isn’t really that bad. It’s almost a steal.
Jessica Simpson Kiss Me Super Skinny Jeans: $47.60
Really though, you could use any black jeans that you want! I didn’t have any at the time, and I owned a pair like this in the past and really liked them. They’re really comfortable! But you could use Target jeans if you wanted. It all depends on your budget and what issues you come across when trying to find jeans in general.
Black Boots: Owned
I have no idea what my boots cost. I’ve had them for years. If you are in need of boots though, I highly suggest checking out DSW Shoes. They have a great clearance section. There’s been times where I’ve walked out of there with four pairs of boots and only paid $60.
Black Belt: $12
I think? It was just a belt I grabbed from Target. I don’t normally wear belts but maybe you do! This is another item that you can grab for cheap.
Sais: Amazon $21
Amazon has a ton of options. I went with the listing that actually had cosplayers in the review section. But I know there are ways to make them with foam and other materials! Some conventions are really cracking down on weapons. Be sure to keep that in mind when picking yours and preparing for your con!
Black Gloves: Amazon $10
Another item you might have laying around the house. I will say this pair kinda rubbed off on my hands after wearing them all day. I probably won’t use them again. I might just grab a new pair from a Halloween or Costume store.
This puts the grand total for Elektra at $290.60. I know it sounds like a lot but it does include a commissioned item. Plus a lot of the above items are things you might already own like the jeans or boots. Don’t forget about coupons as well! They can help save a ton of money when it comes to costumes. Another thing I like to do is gather items over a few months. There’s no need to buy everything at once. The main parts of this costume are every day items, they aren’t going to sell out anytime soon. If you have any questions, drop them in the comments!
And now onto some more photos! I had the chance to finally shoot some photos with MindFall Media and he did such a great job! I love what he did with using the glass of the convention center. I just need to work on my glare. I’ll probably bring Elektra to C2E2. I mean, I have to get a photo with Jon Berthal in costume, right?
