I’ve been to a lot of conventions. Because of that I’m going to break this post down and cover both aspects of it. Sometimes when I sit back and think about the number of cons I go to every year, I freak out! I can only imagine what the number would be if I lived on the West Coast.
Part One: Conventions I’ve Been To!
1. San Diego Comic Con
I’ve been lucky enough to attend this prize jewel four times. I think the first year I attended (2010) was the last year where it was “easy” to buy badges. Now you have to fight to the death just for the chance to attend. Sadly I won’t be attending this year but hope to make it again one day!
2. Baltimore Comic-Con
This is my local convention and one of my favorites. It’s 100% comics which I love! They might feature one “entertainment” guest but that’s it. You won’t catch any Power Rangers here, just amazing writers and artists. Oh and awesome cosplay! Plus it’s later in the year (September) which means the weather is normally decent and helps prolong my Con season! (FYI, the adorable hair flowers you see above are by Little Asian Sweatshop!)
I love SDCC but if I had to pick my favorite convention that I’ve been to, it would be this one held in Chicago. It’s the perfect size and offers just the right mix of comics and entertainment. It’s not as large as its sister show (NYCC) but there’s something for everyone. Plus I’m able to hang out with friends and it’s not impossible to actually meet up with people. Plus I normally stay at the Host Hotel which means the fun goes well into the morning hours!
4. New York Comic-Con
My feelings on this one change every year, but I always find myself going back. I love the show itself, but the layout of the convention center they use is kinda crappy. There’s nothing they can do about that though! The crowd can be pretty insane, especially in more recent years. If you’re on the East Coast and want to attend a convention that has TV, Movies, and Comics (like a mini-SDCC) this is a show you want to check out. The cosplay is always on point as well.
Part Two: Conventions I Want To Attend
This show has been on my list for what feels like forever. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it plus DeFraction and Zdarsky are normally in attendance. It’s another show that’s all about the comics, just like Baltimore Comic-Con. I’m trying to work out a way to attend this year, but if not I’ll be there in 2016 for sure.
2. Emerald City Comic-Con
Another show that I hear good things about! Since it’s across the country though, I’m not sure when I’ll get to attend. Plus they just joined forces with ReedPop. I’m interested to see what changes happen. Have any of you been to ECCC? What do you think?
3. An Out Of Country Convention
I don’t really have one in mind, but I’d love to attend a convention in the UK or even Canada. The world is filled with conventions these days, it would be a shame not to try and attend one that’s held in another country. If you have any suggestions, let me know in the comments!
And there you have it! What conventions have you been to? Which events would you like to check out?
