Now that I’ve seen “Captain America: Civil War” six times, I feel like I can finally give my thoughts! Yes, that says six times. I have a problem OK? This post is probably going to be very random and all over the place. Obviously, some spoilers!
Obviously I loved the movie since I saw it multiple times. And every time I see it I notice something new! I just love how every character had a purpose and when their job was done, they moved on. It could have easily felt over crowded but the Russo Brothers and Stephen McFeely/Christopher Markus (writers) did a really solid job of keeping the balance. The writing team just know Steve Rogers and always nail his character, along with Black Widow. I know a lot of people love Joss but I just don’t feel he handles those two characters well at all. This was the Natasha we all know and love, out there kicking ass and trying to be the voice of reason in a room full of people arguing. I loved seeing the advancement of Wanda and her skills as well. She really brings something different and new to the movies, along with Vision. I can’t wait to see what she can do by the time “Avengers: Infinity War” rolls around. Don’t even get me started on Black Panther. What a fantastic introduction to his character and I loved how he had his own arc in a movie that was filled with Steve/Tony angst. I know some people have issues with Zemo but I feel the best villains are those who have a personal issue with the “good guys.” He wasn’t some guy throwing a hissy fit or trying to take over the world, he simply wanted revenge for the death of his family. I mean, who can blame him? It’s the same reason that even though I’m #TeamCap, I 100% understand why Tony was trying to kill Bucky at the end of the film. I probably would have done the same if I were in his shoes. It’s a complicated issue but your parents are your parents.
Can we talk about the action in this thing? The airport fight was just on another level but my favorite had to be the scene in Romania. I just love a good hand to hand fight, especially when they happen in hallways and stairwells (See: Daredevil Season 2). Then it led into one of the best chase scenes that we’ve had in the MCU. I don’t know how the Russos do it, but they do it. First they gave us that amazing chase with Fury in “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and now this. I can’t even think about the Bucky motorcycle stunt because it does things to me. What a bad ass move! I think people forget what a bad ass is he but everyone is on high alert now. The poor guy just wanted to buy some plums from the market and then all hell broke loose.
When I hard Spider-Man was going to be in this, I moaned about it. I’m not even going to lie. I was over Spidey and was screaming “He doesn’t even go here!” but by the time I left the theater, I was itching for more of Tom Holland as Peter Parker. He just nailed everything. He was just perfect and adorable and nerdy and excited to be here. I did love watching him get knocked around though. I’d laugh to myself anytime he got punched or kicked. Welcome to the big leagues kid. I thought that Tony and Peter had some great chemistry and I can see why they added RDJ to the Spider-Man cast.
Man, I could talk about this movie for days. I just had such a great time watching it and felt so many emotions. I laughed, I cried (surprise, surprise) and found myself speechless. I kept going back and forth on where I ranked this one my list and I have to put it tied for first with “Captain America: Winter Soldier.” I really can’t pick one over the other and I think the two films really compliment each other. Plus they both have Sebastian Stan which ya know, you can’t argue with that. I know we’re still waiting on the 3rd Thor film, but I think it’s safe to say, in my opinion, that the Captain America trilogy is the best that Marvel has done. And I bet even they’re surprised, especially when their Golden Egg is Iron Man. It just goes to show that if you stick with a writing team (they’ve done all the Cap films) and find directors that understand the characters, you can really create something special.
Did you see the movie? What did you think?
