5 Fandom Friday: 5 Films I’m Excited For In 2017

January 20, 2017 3 Comments

There are a lot of movies coming out this year that I’m excited about! It’s honestly pretty hard just to pick five! These are in no special order though. Just the order they popped into my head!

1. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 (May 5th)

I am beyond excited for this one! I really loved the first GOTG and it ranks high on my MCU list. And just look at Toddler Groot! How adorable is he? I’m excited about all the new characters we’ll be meeting as well, including Mantis! I really love her look and can’t wait to see what kind of role she plays in the film.

2. Wonder Woman (June 2)

I might be a Marvel fan at heart, but I’ll always hold a special place for Wonder Woman. I’m really excited about what we’ve seen and I’m trying to have faith that DC/WB won’t mess this one up. Every fan deserves great movies, no matter who they root for!

3. Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7)

I’m not going to lie, when I heard Spider-Man was going to be rebooted yet again, I wasn’t that excited. I was even more annoyed that he was going to be part of the MCU. Then “CA: Civil War” happened and I couldn’t fucking wait for more Peter Parker! I’m interested to see what type of cameos we might see, or what little easter eggs might be tossed into the background.

4. Thor: Ragnarok (November 3)

I have a love/hate relationship with Thor movies. They aren’t horrible but they aren’t at the top of my list either. They just kinda exist and I like them enough. When I heard that Hulk was going to be part of the movie, and Hela was going to be the villain I was ecstatic! I mean, a female baddie?! It’s about time. I think Thor will really benefit from having Hulk around as well. I think Thor is a character that does better when he’s teamed up with the Avengers.

5. The Lego Batman Movie (February 10th)

There’s only one Batman movie I give a shit about and it’s this one! I loved Batman in “The Lego Movie” and I have a thing for Will Arnett. Plus the voice cast for this movie is pretty awesome with Rosario Dawson, Ralph Feinnes, and Zach Galifianakis.

Honorable Mention: Logan (March 3)

I am beyond excited to watch X-23 fuck shit UP in this movie. Plus it seems that Fox learned from “Deadpool” and just gave those involved the money they needed and stepped back. I really hope this is the Wolverine movie we’ve all been waiting for. I have a feeling Professor X will make me cry.

Of course I could probably list five more movies if I really wanted to. It was pretty hard to just list these six! To learn more about Fandom Friday and see the rest of the topics for the year, check out The Nerdy Girlie! What movies are you looking forward to?

Fandom Friday: Guilty Pleasures

April 8, 2016 17 Comments

This week the topic is Guilty Pleasures but I’m doing things a bit different. But first, here’s the basic definition of Guilty Pleasure:

something, such as a movie, television program, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard.

You see, I’m not sure I believe in “guilty pleasures.” I feel that if you like something, you like something. You shouldn’t feel bad, or guilty over it. If you love watching reality TV or binge watching comedy specials on Netflix, do you! If you still jam out to Nsync (I do), then be proud of that! I just think too often we’re (especially women) made to feel bad about liking certain things, and I don’t understand why. If something brings you joy, that’s a good thing! I’ll let you in on a secret. I am addicted to the show “Catfish” on MTV. I love it. I watch it via text with Melinda and we can’t get enough of it. Some people might think of it as a GP but I don’t. Why should I? I find it entertaining. I’m 33 years old and I watch “Teen Wolf.” Should I feel guilty or weird about that? If so, why? Did I mention I watch tons of cartoons still? Is that something I should keep to myself?

large

If you think about it, being a nerd years ago was along the same lines of a guilty pleasure. It was something you should keep to yourself that way you weren’t bullied or teased. As we all know, times have changed and people are now loud and proud about loving comic books and super heroes. Shouldn’t we feel that way about everything we enjoy? I’m not saying we should all shove our loves down each others throats, but there’s no need to keep your love of something in the dark. When I first started going to conventions I didn’t tell many people, especially my coworkers if they asked where I was going on vacation. But now? I tell them and I mention my cosplay and everything else. You know what happened? I found coworkers who were into the same thing! See what happens when you learn to just embrace what you enjoy?

Maybe I got a little too deep on this post, but that’s fine. I know a lot of times the phrase “guilty pleasure” it used in a non-serious way. I know I’ve used it before but maybe it’s time to change that.

5 Fandom Friday: Geeky Tattoos I Want Or Have

March 18, 2016 8 Comments

I got super excited when I saw this topic! Probably a little too excited but oh well! I love tattoos, and I love geeky tattoos. I have a few which I’ll share below, along with ideas for some others!

1. David Aja/Matt Fraction Hawkeye Arrow

Artist: Emily Sloman
Artist: Emily Sloman

I had this tattoo done in December 2012. I even had Matt Fraction sign it when I saw him at a convention (No, I didn’t get that tattooed) and David Aja has commented on it via Twitter! I just really love the artwork and story of their Hawkeye series. Plus it’s no secret that I love Hawkeye. I do consider this book though the one that really got me into comics. I think it’s the first book I added to my pull list.

2. Elsa Chang Black Widow

Artist: Emily Sloman
Artist: Emily Sloman

I love Black Widow which means this tattoo should be a surprise to no one. I had been thinking about a pin up style tattoo but couldn’t land on what look I wanted. There are tons of styles and designs out there. Then I had a light bulb moment when I was looking at some of the artwork I owned. I reached out to Elsa to make sure it was cool I had it done and she said of course! This lovely lady was done in January 2015. Oh FYI, it’s been featured on Buzzfeed.

3. Till The End Of The Line

Artist: Hunter Spanks
Artist: Hunter Spanks

This is my newest tattoo and was done in September 2015 before I headed off to Baltimore Comic-Con. The handwriting actually belongs to my friend Katy. She’s the Steve to my Bucky. Yup, I have a lot of Marvel related tattoos.

4. Jurassic World Raptor by Josh Bodwell

If you haven’t checked out the work of Josh Bodwell, do it now. He’s on my list of people I need tattoos by. I even emailed him about this tattoo but it’s a little out of my budget at the moment. One day though his art will be found on my body. I’m just not sure when!

5. Maybe More Widows

I have this idea of maybe turning my one Widow into many and having a thigh sleeve (is that even a thing?) done. My only concern is taking away from or messing up what I currently have. I love her beyond word and would hate for anything to ruin that. On the other hand I think it would be pretty amazing to have a few Black Widows by different amazing artists.

And now a few tips. Before you get any tattoo work done, be sure to do your research! While one artist might be great at portraits, they might not be great at text. Don’t assume just because they can do one style, they can do all of them. Be sure to read reviews too about the shops. Are they clean? How were the clients treated? If you’re going after an artist that’s highly sought after, don’t be surprised if there’s a wait list. I made my appointment for Widow in June and didn’t see the artist until January to have the actual work done. I know people are mixed on “you get what you pay for” when it comes to tattoos. It’s one thing to get a tattoo free or for a discount from a friend, it’s another thing when the price is low to begin with, especially if it’s a larger piece, detailed, or has a lot of color. I have a tattoo that was only $50, but it’s a small black paw print. That’s 100% a fair price. In this day and age, it’s just so easy to do your research thanks to Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Remember, this is something that’s going on your body (hopefully) forever. You don’t want to end up like me, getting a bad tattooed lasered off years later. It’s not cheap, and it hurts. Learn from my mistake kids!

Fandom Friday: My OTPs

February 5, 2016 20 Comments

If you aren’t familiar with OTP, it stands for One True Pairing! Now that you’re up on the lingo let’s get do it!

1. Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers

tumblr_ntic8kPbyp1qgn6muo1_500

I mean, did you expect anything less? I just love that Peggy truly loved Steve for who he was before he became Captain American. She cared for him even when he was Skinny Steve and was concerned for him going into the entire experiment. And the way Steve bumbled around her at first? Hell, even after becoming Captain America? My heart can’t take it. And then during Winter Soldier? OH JUST CRUSH MY HEART WHY DON’T YOU.

2. Andy Dwyer/April Ludgate

tumblr_notv8g2tr31ust4wfo1_500

They just have way too much fun together, it should be illegal. Plus they’re just adorable. I love how April always tries to be this big bad ass but around Andy she’s lets her guard down a bit. Then you have Andy who’s like a Golden Retriever in human form.

3. Poe/Finn

f17c2320-9147-0133-395e-06e18a8a4ae5

I will go down with this ship. Not gonna lie, before I saw the movie I thought maybe everyone was just building something up that wasn’t really there. Oh it’s there. It doesn’t help that Oscar just oozes sex appeal.

4. Alec Hardison/Parker

a9a0c7afcf84eec16b387a4987afb92f

I’ve been rewatching “Leverage” and I forgot how much I loved these two together. They’re both a little awkward and different, which makes it even more adorable. Ugh, I miss this show! I wish we could get a movie or something.

5. Tony Stark/JARVIS

tumblr_mmtcvnzapQ1qgmq18o4_500

I can see the face your making but hear me out! JARVIS is honestly the one “person” who has always been there for Tony, even when he doesn’t realize it (like in Age of Ultron). JARVIS might be an AI but the relationship they have is very real. I think he was the one person Tony fully trusted.

And there you go! I tried to mix it up a bit and think I did a pretty fair job. I’m excited to see who everyone else has on their lists. Honestly, that’s one of the best parts of Fandom Friday!

5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Late To The Game TV Discoveries

January 29, 2016 23 Comments

It’s once again time for 5 Fandom Friday! As always it’s brought to us by Megan and Kristen. This time we’re talking about TV that we were tardy to the party on!

1. Parks & Recreation

4URtsfo

Yup. I didn’t start watching until right before the last season started. I fell in love with Pratt due to Guardians and I had always heard good things about the show. I fired up Netflix and my life was never the same.

2. Supernatural

good_answer_supernatural

This is one of those shows that I think I missed out on before because it aired against another show I loved. Because once I started watching I was like, how the hell did I not watch this earlier? I binged way too many seasons and caught myself. Lately though I’ve fallen off the wagon. I’m super behind but I’m not actually worried about it? I’ll catch up sooner or later.

3. Teen Wolf

tumblr_inline_mx7t8aGVXb1rwldfd

I’m pretty sure when I first heard about a show called “Teen Wolf” I laughed and then was confused when it had nothing to do with the movie. Then Melinda some how talked me into watching it and the rest is history. Actually I think she warned me NOT to watch because it would ruin my life. She was right.

4. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

tumblr_nldwhzCrFZ1szhq54o1_500

I wasn’t super late on this but in the world of Netflix a few months is more like a few years. I finally watched it during a long weekend last year and loved it. I couldn’t believe it took me that long to watch! I can’t wait for the next season.

5. The Fall

tumblr_mv88m1Ap6m1riop3bo1_r1_500

I think Twitter pointed me in the direction of this show and I am in love. If you love a good serial killer show, then this is for you. Plus it has Jamie Dornan being all hot and scruffy and Gillian Anderson being a super bad ass, as usual.

Were you late to the party for any shows? Let me know in the comments!
