I know you’re thinking, but Barb? I thought this wasn’t until December. You’re right reader! But when the shop calls and says that your artist has an earlier spot open, you take it! I took the day off and headed down to Black Lotus Tattoo to see Halo. If the name sounds familiar, he was on Season 4 of Ink Master! But before we get into the tattooing, I should probably explain how this even happened.
I’ve been thinking about a Catwoman tattoo for awhile now. “Batman Returns” is my favorite Batman movie and was probably the first comic book movie I saw. I fell in love with Catwoman (like most people did). I’ve also always wanted to have something done by Halo. It’s not easy to get a spot though as he’s pretty picky with what he tattoos and his schedule is pretty much closed. I follow him on social media and when I saw him make a post on Instagram about a few tattoos he wanted to do, I saw that one was an amazing Catwoman. I needed to have it on my body. I sent an email and while I couldn’t make the date he wanted (4th of July), he offered a spot later on in the year because he really wanted to do the tattoo. Obviously I said yes. It was like a perfect storm. I put down my deposit and started saving up. Then on Friday is when I got the call about an earlier spot.
I was booked from Noon to 8PM. I was fully expecting to be there all day since it was a pretty detailed tattoo. I arrived right on time, checked in, and then the fun began! Halo came out and introduced himself and I could tell he was really excited about doing this tattoo! He went back and worked a few different stencils to get the size right. We went with something larger in order to make sure we got all the details. Plus there’s a lot of black and you want everything to look good from a distance. It took about an hour for the drawing/stencil part. I think we started tattooing maybe around 1-ish. The shop is beautiful though. I’ve been there before to get piercings done but this was my first time there for a tattoo. It’s such a clean and bright space. There’s TV screens everywhere playing movies or music. It’s a very relaxing shop. Everyone is having a great time, laughing and sharing stories. Halo was beyond easy to talk to and we actually had a fair amount in common which was nice! I mean, you’re spending hours with this person. It’s important to have personalities that mesh. He has a very light tattoo hand. Some artists are too heavy handed but not him. Obviously it still hurt, it’s a tattoo! But it could have been a lot worse. He even used a pain spray to help when we got closer to the end. By that point he was going over spots numerous times to get the details in. That is when the pain kicked in. But then, he was done! I couldn’t believe it. I think it only took about 5-5.5 hours and that included one 10-20 minute break. I was 100% surprised we finished when we did! I headed over to the mirror to check her out and guys, I almost cried. I totally did the “hands over mouth” thing because she’s just perfect. And he was really pleased with it too and that just makes everything better and totally worth it.
Here are some progress photos!
And the finished tattoo!
*sobs* She’s so perfect and stunning! And yes, it’s huge. I’m a small person to begin with but man, I wouldn’t change the size of her for anything. It just fits perfectly! He wants me to come back in January to see if there’s any touching up that needs to be done. As far as healing goes, it’s going well! I’m using Saniderm for the first time and talk about a fucking tattoo godsend! It allows you to wear pants if you want, shower, not ooze all over your sheets! Plus there’s no itching! Or ugly scabbing! I have to keep it on until Sunday but man, this stuff is great so far. If you’re someone who gets tattooed, look into this stuff. You can learn more about it here.
That’s it! If you have any questions drop them in the comments!
