Universal Fan Con Is Coming To Baltimore But Needs Your Help

December 16, 2016 3 Comments

A new con is hoping to hit the circuit but they need your help! Universal Fan Con has taken to Kickstarter to try and raise funds to help get the party started. As of right now, the convention is scheduled to take place in Baltimore in April 2018. What makes Universal Fan Con different?

Many cons, no matter how well meaning, limit the idea of inclusion to a diversity panel, never really integrating the spirit of an inclusive world into the fabric of the con itself. This can leave many feeling isolated and marginalized, in essence, like the outsiders so many of our heroes tend to be.

Universal Fan Con grew out of the idea that a con should be a space where everyone can see themselves represented in the genres that they love. From the panels, to the celebrity guests and activities, all the way down to the parties, we believe that the con experience should be a celebration of the differences that make us strong. In this time of political divisiveness rooted in fear, Universal Fan Con is here to celebrate the power of inclusion and representation.

I’m really excited to see this come together. How many times have we seen “diversity” panels that only feature men? Or just well, white people? There are so many nerd voices that need to be heard and seen, and I believe this convention could be the answer. The people behind this idea are the creators of Black Girl Nerds and The Black Geeks. You know right away that this idea is in good hands.

I’ve backed and checked out a lot of Kickstarters and I have to say they did a great job on their pledges and rewards. For just $35 you can get a weekend pass and a celebrity photo op. I’ve done a lot of conventions and $35 can barely get you the photo op alone these days. If you’re coming from out of town, $250 will get you two weekend passes plus Saturday night hotel accommodations! Guys, I live in Baltimore. I know how expensive hotel rooms can be. This is a steal! But if you’re on a budget (and it is the holidays), for $10 you can get a celebrity photo op. They offer a ton of tiers, be sure to check them all out! What are you waiting for, go check out their Kickstarter!!
