I don’t consider myself a cosplayer at all. Yes, I cosplay but it’s not something I do on the regular or really promote. Know what I mean? It’s something I do for fun when the mood strikes. Plus I still consider myself very new to the world of cosplay but one thing I’ve learned is that it doesn’t need to be expensive! When you hear people say “anyone can cosplay,” it’s true. Have I paid “a lot” for commissions? Yes. But since I can’t really sew, it’s a choice I make depending on the costume. But there are plenty of characters out there that you can put together from your closet or for a pretty decent price!
Age of Ultron – Scarlet Witch
This is one of my favorite costumes because of the most part it’s comfortable. It can get a little warm with the wig and jacket though. It is a costume that you can easily put together. The dress I bought for around $10 at Forever 21. The red jacket was something I already owned (purchased at JC Penney on sale) along with the boots. The socks I picked up from Target on the clearance rack. The necklaces and arm wraps I bought from Etsy. They were each around $40. If you browse Etsy now though you’ll find the necklaces as low as $15. Or if you’re crafty you can always make then yourself! The same goes for the arm wraps. They don’t have to be perfect. When you have a few main items (dress/jacket), people will know right off the bat who you are. I did grab a wig which was $33 and that included the shipping. So, give or take, this came in around $140-ish. Oh, I bought red contacts as well but you really don’t need them. I just wanted to try something different.
I’m pretty sure if most of you went to your closet right now, you’d be able to put most of this together. I don’t think it gets any easier than this look. A pair of jeans, scarf, leather jackets, gray top, and boots. Boom, you’re done. If you want, carry around a camera for fun! Or a bottle of booze. If you’re in need for a jacket, hit up the sales! JC Penney will sometimes but their jackets on sale for as much as 60% off, plus you can always find coupons. Or if you have some decent thrift shops near you, you can probably find something there that works. If you need a wig, you could snag one for probably between $25-$40 depending on where you shop.
Gravity Falls – Wendy
Shut up, I love this cartoon and I love Wendy. This is another costume that you could easily pull together on a budget. You can find plaid shirts almost anywhere (I know I’ve seen ’em at Target) and with fall/winter approaching the hat should be easy to find as well. If you wanted to add the axe to your outfit I know you can get one pretty cheap at the Halloween store or Party City! The most expensive item would probably be the wig. The Le Tigre from Arda Wigs would probably be perfect in Pumpkin or Fire Orange. It’s $40. You could probably find something on Ebay as well but just be careful! Sometimes the quality can be hit or miss.
Kate “Hawkeye” Bishop
Yes, Kate Bishop has a traditional super hero outfit but thanks to the Fraction/Aja/Wu run of “Hawkeye,” she has tons of casual looks as well. Honestly, throw on some purple and carry around a stuffed dog or bow and you’re set. I’d probably grab a pair of purple sunglasses as well. I’m not sure it gets any easier really?
I could go on and on but I think you get the drift! Cosplay doesn’t need to cost you hundreds of dollars and take up all your time. It can be done on a budget and with limited skills. Seriously, if I can pull something together anyone can. It’s all about shopping around, asking friends for help, and attempting a little DIY. And remember, nothing needs to be perfect! If you have a few main pieces everything else will fall into place and people will get it. Now what are you waiting for? Go forth and cosplay!
