I know for some people throwing money at different Kickstarters is part of their budget. Then you have people like me who have to be pretty picky with what they back. It’s always hard to know what to support when there are thousands of great projects floating around out there. I’m here to help though! The Black of Heart Kickstarter is something you should take a look at, especially if you’re into crime or non-super hero comics. I’ve actually been lucky enough to own a few issues (sadly never got around to picking up the final issue because I suck) and it’s a book I really love and enjoy. Here’s a little info about the story:
Set against the backdrop of 1949 New York City, Detective Drake Harper searches for a serial killer known as “The Vulture” while battling his own personal demons as his life falls to pieces. With the fluid writing style of Chris Charlton nothing is held back in this “Adults Only” graphic novel featuring the surrealistic mixed media art style of David Hollenbach.
The art in this book is something very unique and a style I haven’t seen used very often. It really does add something to the story and makes it even creepier than it already is. Chris is really talented writer and knows how to deliver a cliffhanger. I’m sure you’re asking “Well, if this is a thing that’s already happened, what’s the Kickstarter for?” I have answers friends! They’re trying to collect the single issues into a beautiful hardcover collection.
This hardcover edition collects all five original issues of the BLACK OF HEART mini-series, a brand new 7-page epilogue, a pinup gallery featuring all new never-before-seen artwork, and a foreword written by author, Mark Kidwell. All of this adds up to a 180-page package.
The book will be printed in full color despite much of the art being black and white with only splashes of color and the cover will be embossed with other printing embellishments we can reach with stretch goals.
The goal of this campaign is to raise the funds for printing, but the added promotion innate to crowd-funding doesn’t hurt!
They offer backing levels from $5 all the way up to $200. Let me tell you, what you get at the $200 level is beautiful.
I wish I had $200 to throw at this because this speaks to me. I can picture it sitting below one of my Poe prints. At the moment though I can only afford the $35 level which gets you a copy of the hardcover, plus some other little goodies. Right now they still have 11 days to go and have been able to reach 50% of their goal! If you still aren’t sure, check out this little review from 2014 that I wrote about the comic. See, told you I’ve actually read it!
