There have been a few posts that have brought this feeling up lately:
The posts above hit the nail on the head. If you don’t have a “niche” blog, it’s hard out there. I honestly don’t know what my place in the bloggingspehere is. I blog about everything. I blog about conventions. I blog about personal stuff. I blog about toys. I blog about vacations. I’d be lying if I said I don’t care if anyone reads this blog. I wouldn’t be blogging if I didn’t want readers. Or commenters. It’s nice to feel part of a community and like the two above, I’ve been blogging for years. I remember using LiveJournal. Blogger. GREYMATTER. Does anyone else remember that? You used it for blogging on self hosted sites. It was like WordPress before WordPress came along. Hell, I ran FANLISTING sites. I swear I had the J.C. Chasez fanlistings on lock down. People actually complained about. Haters gonna hate.
I mentioned in a comment on one of the blogs how everything seems to happen in waves. I remember when I first started really blogging and using sites like BlogExplosion, how everything was pretty much a personal blog. We really did just write about our daily lives. There were a few niche blogs in the mix. I remember a few that were dedicated to sports, travel, food. But the majority of them were just us sharing our lives with each other. Some of them were ugly and filled with honesty. Others were great at using humor to bring their posts to life. Then sponsored posts became a thing. There were a few sites you could sign up for and then you’d get matched with things. Hell, I did it. But then it felt like everything was a sponsored post or ad. You had no idea anymore what was legit and what wasn’t. Then that kinda faded away and everything went back to “normal.” But now it’s back to sponsors and featured ads and the like. Which is great! Get that money! Some of you put A TON of work into your blogs and you should reap those benefits. Plus we all know running a self hosted website isn’t cheap. It quickly adds up.
But then there’s blogs like mine, where this is something I do for fun. Where I don’t want to really put a ton of work into it. I don’t want to spend hours on photos. Or designs. Or having 15 drafts saved and ready to go. I work a full time job already (and start a part time job tomorrow), the last thing I need or want is for something that should be fun or “easy” to feel like another job. I know there are others like me out there, but I feel like we get lost in the mix these days. I go on BlogLovin looking for suggestions and everything is so far off base. Make Up Blogs. Crafting Blogs. Fashion Blogs. Blog Blogs. Nothing against them, I just don’t have anything in common with most of them. And I definitely don’t need to read a blog that tells me what I’m doing “wrong” with my own.
I honestly have no idea what I’m trying to say with this post. Maybe that you don’t need to have a niche? Don’t feel pressured into being something you’re not? That you don’t need to be perfect, because believe it or not, no one is.
