If you remember, awhile back I did an interview with Sabrina who does Hot Toys photography. Well, this time around I reached out to my friend Jordan who does video reviews! I really never new video reviews of figures were a thing until I joined the Sideshow Freaks Forum. But guess? It’s a “thing,” and a pretty big one at that. Jordan was nice enough to answer a few questions I had about her process and reviewing in general!
When did you get into collecting Hot Toys? What drew you to them?
I began collecting shortly after The Avengers was released in theaters. I had absolutely fallen in love with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and was constantly looking up apparel, prints, collectibles,
basically anything Avengers related! My friend and I were searching for pictures of Loki and Hawkeye (our two favorite characters) and some of the ones we came across were that of their Hot Toy figures. I was blown away by how realistic they looked. Soon after I decided to go ahead and order one to see what they were like and needless to say I became hooked!
How did you decide to do video reviews?
The idea of doing reviews myself just seemed like fun! I thought about whether or not I should start doing reviews for a good month or so before I actually did my first one. I figured it couldn’t hurt to
give it a shot and I’m really happy I did.
What’s your set up like for recording? Software that you use? Camera?
My set up is ever changing because I’m always looking for ways to improve my reviews. Currently I use a rectangular table covered with a large black cloth. The background is a white poster board.
I use the camera on my iPhone for the most part. It’s actually very good for capturing detail in close up shots! Recently I have begun using a Canon EOS Rebel T3i as well. I usually switch between the two depending on what section of the review I’m filming.
Once I’ve finished shooting, I upload everything into iMovie and make any necessary edits and adjustments. I add in title slides, transitions and music. I give it a final watch just to see if I have
missed anything then if its all good I upload it!
What’s the hardest part, in your opinion, of doing reviews?
Personally, the hardest part of doing reviews is remaining objective and fair. Because I do scores for various categories in my reviews, I have to contain my initial enthusiasm so I can scrutinize the figure a bit and give scores that I feel truly represent what we as collectors are getting. Sometimes simply deciding a score is difficult. Half the time I just want to say it’s awesome, give it a
perfect and call it done!
Do you have any tips or advice for those who want to get into reviewing figures?
My advice to potential reviewers would be to have confidence in your opinion. Also try and find a way to give a new spin on the review! Have a unique style or anything that can set you apart from others.
What figure is your favorite? Is there any you missed out on that you’d love to own?
My favorite figure I own is Hawkeye from The Avengers: Age of Ultron. I am a huge fan of the character and the figure is simply amazing.
Oh absolutely there are figures I wish I had gotten! When I had just begun collecting, I wasn’t sure it would be a long-term hobby for me so I passed on quite a few things. The top two are The Avengers Hawkeye and Coulson.
What Hot Toy figures will you be reviewing soon? Anything fun on the way?
Next up is Thor and Maria Hill, both from the Avengers sequel. And there is much more after that! I’m lucky enough to be able to be getting the entire Age of Ultron line up including the massive Hulkbuster! That has to be the figure I’m looking forward to the most, I mean there isn’t anything quite like it.
I hope you enjoyed this little interview. Honestly, my favorite part of her reviews is the fact they’re short. Some reviewers out there go on and on, but Jordan keeps it pretty short and sweet. It’s perfect for someone like me who has no attention span on the internet. If you want to see more of her reviews be sure to check out her YouTube channel!
