Yesterday I attended an early screening of the latest Marvel film, “Ant-Man.” Unlike most people, I’ve really been looking forward to this movie. I didn’t care that they switched directors, I didn’t care that it was Scott in the main role instead of Hank. I had liked what I had seen up to this point and besides, who doesn’t love Paul Rudd? Unlike with “Age of Ultron” though I tried not to watch all the trailers and clips. I learned my lesson and wanted this movie to be as surprising as possible. With that said…
I loved this film. I honestly think it’s my 2nd favorite MCU film after “Captain America: Winter Soldier.” It reminded me of the first Iron Man film. It was fun, it didn’t take itself too seriously, and the supporting cast was fantastic. They really did make the film in my opinion. Everyone saying Michael Peña stole the show is 100% correct. After AOU, it was nice to see a super hero movie that wasn’t filled with huge explosions, instead it felt like there were more personal stakes. Oh and don’t get me started on the ants. I now want to have ant friends who do my bidding. They were adorable.
And before anyone asks, yes, there are two post credit scenes. I SAID TWO. When people started leaving the theater after it ended I couldn’t help but shake my head. The post credit scenes were fantastic and did a great job of setting up future films. Honestly, “Ant-Man” did a great job with that. They mentioned Stark, I swear a headline of a newspaper mentioned something about Winter Soldier, all these little threads that are part of a larger ball of string.
If you’re wondering about the effects, man did everything look great. There was only one or two times where I thought something felt off but that could have been the 3D. I loved seeing everything from the smaller perspective and the fight scenes were just really unique because of that. There’s a scene near the end that just looks like something you’d see in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” I actually heard someone say “Wow” out loud during it.
In the end, I really recommend seeing this film. I can’t wait to see it again on Thursday!
