When I saw the previews for this movie I knew I had to see it. Amy Adams? Jeremy Renner? Katniss? I was sold on the cast alone. There was no way a movie made up of this much talent could suck, and I was right! I knew nothing about the story going into the movie, other than it was “based on” a true story. I knew it was getting a ton of critic love but I honestly try not to pay attention to that. I don’t like getting my hopes and expectations up when it comes to entertainment. We all enjoy different things and I really don’t care about award nominations.
Of course now that I’ve seen it I hope it gets all the awards. If Christian Bale isn’t nominated for something, I’ll flip my shit. The transformation he did physically for the role was pretty amazing. I mean, it didn’t even look like him. If I showed you his character in this movie next to a photo of him as Bruce Wayne, you’d never guess it was the same actor. He had the entire role nailed to a tee. It was the look, the way he walked and talked. Then you have Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence who both got to wear some amazing fashion. Oh and Adams nailed it. She nailed it hard. The way she was able to go back and forth between accents, and roles really, was a thrill to watch. She wasn’t just playing one character, she was pretty much playing two. Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner both did a splendid job as well. Renner wasn’t in the movie as much as Bale, Adams, and Cooper but when he was on screen you really believed in his character. You were convinced. As I said before, this cast is what makes the entire thing work. They all played off each other so well it was truly something to see. Do I really need to say Jennifer Lawrence was great? Because she was.
As far as the plot/story line goes, the first half was a little better than the second. I feel like the second part was a little rushed. I found myself wondering what was going on a few times just because it moved around a bit too fast. You really don’t know what the timeline is. Is everything happening within a few days? Weeks? Over a couple months? Maybe it was mentioned and I just didn’t catch it. As far as a drama or a comedy, I’m leaning towards Dramedy. I found myself laughing, along with everyone else, but it had some pretty touching/sad moments as well. I don’t feel like it’s a comedy because that bring to mind “Anchorman” or “The Heat.” It’s not some heart wrenching drama either though. Movies, why you so confusing?!
If you’ve been on the fence about seeing it, go. I think you’ll enjoy it but honestly, this movie had me at “Science Oven.”
